Question: on a scale of lousy boss to inspirational leader, where do you see yourself? Anyone can call themselves boss and bark instructions to a group of people, but it takes a certain set of qualities to be a leader, and a truly exceptional one at that.
Here are five signs you’re a great leader.
1. You’re a visionary
Who wants to follow someone who doesn’t know where they’re going? Great leaders have the bigger picture in mind and know what it will take to get there. They are also able to convey this vision to their team and motivate them to strive towards the end goal.
2. You know how to communicate well
Good communication is a skill, and being able to communicate effectively with others is vital. Can you listen empathetically? Are you able to engage genuinely with your teammates? How do you communicate criticism? Studies have shown that employees perform better when they feel their concerns have been heard. Effective listening skills are a huge part of communication, if not the most important aspect.
3. You’re not afraid of learning from others
A great leader knows they don’t have all the answers. They draw on the strengths of their team and don’t try to be a know-it-all. In addition, they are continually looking to improve and learn new skills.
4. You elevate and inspire others
When people talk about the impact of a certain leader in their lives, they remember how that person inspired them to be better and do better. Are you an inspiration to those around you? Is your team thinking “wow, this person encourages me to be better every day”, or are you just breathing down people’s necks?
5. You talk about “us” more than “I”
Great leaders are team players. If you are always going on about your own reputation, then you’re probably not a great leader. A great leader knows that a win is a win for all, and not just themselves. Selflessness is key to great leadership.
